Doors open at 6:00pm--Open Seating so get here early to get the best seats
Film screening begins at 6:30pm and will be emceed by Maria Ines Zamudio.
Community discussion follows the screening at 7:30pm.
The panel will be led by filmmaker, Arielle Nobile; the film's subject, Michael D. McCarty, and his daughter, Carla McCarty; and the subject of an upcoming film, Lourdes Nicholls, and her daughter, Mari Kaczkowski. Discussion will cover topics reflected in the film such as racism, freedom, spiritual journeys, faith, resilience, overcoming addiction, family and so much more.
“Belonging in the USA: The Story of Michael D. McCarty” shares the journey of a man who even in the face of great obstacles spreads joy wherever he goes. Follow Michael as he evolves from aspiring scientist to the Black Panther Party, from FBI target to soldier, from drug addiction to an ashram. The twists and turns of Michael’s life will fill you with hope, laughter and a living example of resilience. Blending interviews with stop motion animation and archival footage, Michael’s story reminds us how we grow through the challenges life throws our way.
